Summer activities at Anderson-Lee Library scheduled

SILVER CREEK — The Anderson-Lee Library, located at 43 Main St. in Silver Creek, has announced its summer programming. In addition to a number of special events, on-going features will be offered. When registration is required, stop by the library or call 934-3468 to sign up.

Summer Reading Program “Build a Better World”

This year, Anderson-Lee Library’s summer reading program’s theme is “Build a Better World!”

Join the staff for the kickoff to six weeks of reading and fun on Tuesday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. 2 p.m. registration and special activities will be held, including the ever-popular library scavenger hunt. All children from birth to 18 years old are invited to register and will receive a free book when they register. Adults are encouraged to register too!

At 3 p.m., all ages are invited to enjoy a performance by Defiant Monkey! This two-person improvisational group creates on-the-spot theatre, based on audience suggestions and participation, as seen on the TV show “Whose Line is It Anyway?” Registration for the performance is required.

Please note that registration for summer reading begins Tuesday, June 27 and continues throughout the six-week program. Those who can’t make the kickoff event can stop by anytime during open library hours to register or register online at www.andersonleelibrary.com.

Events for Children and Families

Thursday, June 29 at 11 a.m., folk singer Nan Hoffman returns with her beautiful voice and fun instruments to help celebrate summer reading. All ages are welcome and registration is required. Thursday, July 6 at 11 a.m., Wondermakers bring their story theatre show of multicultural folktales about making the world an even better place through respect, kindness, and learning about cultures around the world. Best for ages 3-10 and their families. Registration is required.

Thursday, July 13 at 11 a.m., The Jeffers will perform. Come learn about building a better world through magic and laughter. All ages are welcome and registration is required.

Thursday, July 20 at 11 a,m,, Wild Spirit Education will visit the library to explore “green energy alternatives” in this interactive program. Participants will create their own energy through wind, solar, and hydro power. An “energy machine” will allow those present to understand where electricity comes from and the difference between AC and DC power. Best for grades 3 and up. Registration is required.

Thursday, July 27 at 11 a,.m., Omnipresent Puppet Theater performs The Three Little Pigs! The Big Bad Wolf is back, and this time he’s menacing three pigs just out on their own in the world. But the brick house is only half finished! This story of teamwork takes all the pigs’ efforts to complete the house before the wolf comes! Red Riding Hood’s Grandmother makes a cameo appearance. Recommended for ages 3 and up. Registration is required.

Tuesdays with Miss Amy

At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 11, 18, and 25, Miss Amy will hold a story/activity time for those ages 5 to 12. Registration is required.

Stories, crafts, and activities related to the following themes will be offered:

July 11: Building Bridges!

July 18: Upcycle/Recycle!

July 25: Nature in your Community!

The last Tuesday of the six-week program, Aug. 1, will be a bike safety clinic held in conjunction with the Village of Silver Creek’s Recreation Program and Spoke Folk from Dunkirk. Kids of all ages are invited to come have a bike safety inspection and learn about safe riding. Upon completion of the event, free bicycle helmets will be available to those who do not own a safe helmet. Free helmets are limited. Registration is required.

Friday Afternoon Matinee

This new program will run each Friday in July at 2 p.m. in the technology room of the library. Popcorn and water will be available. Space is limited and registration is required.

Friday July 14: “Toy Story”

Friday July 21: “Tangled”

Friday July 28: “The Lorax”

Lego Club

On Saturdays, July 8 to 29, Lego Club will be held at 11 a.m. for children ages 5 to 12. Registration is required. Challenges will be given each week and will include great architecture of the world, bridges, musical instruments and The Lorax. Registration is required.

End of Summer Reading Program Celebration

Channel 7 weatherman Mike Randall will come to the library on Friday, Aug. 4 at noon to help celebrate the end of the summer reading program. Randall’s funny, fast-paced show will include magic, ventriloquism, audience participation and lots and lots of fun. All ages will enjoy this show that reminds everyone of the importance of reading. Registration is required.

Programs for All Ages

Operation Gratitude: Thank You Letters to the Military

All ages are invited to the library on Monday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. to write thank you notes and letters or produce art work to send to current and retired military members. All items will be sent to Operation Gratitude and will be part of care packages that Operation Gratitude organizes. These notes and drawings from all ages are a critically important part of the packages sent and to Operation Gratitude’s mission of putting a smile on a service member’s face. Handwritten notes are cherished by the troops, especially when so far from home. All materials and snacks will be provided. Registration is encouraged but not necessary.

Family Game Night will be offered on Thursdays June 29, July 27, and Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. This program is free and open to the public. The library will have board and card games available, but participants are invited to bring their favorite to share. All ages are welcome. Registration is encouraged but not necessary.

Adult Programs

Cosmic Doodling Mandala Style: On Tuesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m., local artist Tina Tompkins Ames will lead a fun and creative class that will guide participants through the process of creating and coloring their own mandala. Participants will draw easy shapes and patterns and then fill them in with colors of their choosing. No artist experience is necessary. This program is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For ages 18 and older.

Craft Fair Show and Tell: On Monday, Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m., local crafters will discuss and demonstrate how to make their favorite crafts and participants will be able to make their own to take home. Crafts to be demonstrated include making greeting cards, magnets, coasters and more! Come get your craft on! This program is free and open to the public. All materials will be provided. Registration is required. For ages 18 and older.

Novels After Noon and Novels at Night: This book club for adults 18+ meets the first Monday of the month at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Books scheduled for the summer include “The Husband’s Secret,” by Liane Moriarty on June 5; “Flight Behavior,” by Barbara Kingsolver on July 3, and “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race,” by Margot Lee Shetterly on Aug. 7. This program is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
