Teachers get many started on the path of life

STANDING UP for Education

RENEE GARRETT

As a superintendent, I understand the tremendous responsibility that I have when it comes to making a difference in the lives of our students.

Education is so important for so many reasons. My personal experience is an example of that statement. Some might be surprised to learn that I grew up in poverty and all that comes with it.

Overcoming difficulty in life does make you stronger. As a child it was my normal. As a student, I would pay a quarter for my lunch every day. When I was young, I didn’t know that in order to qualify for that, I needed to be in a family that lived below the poverty line. I thought everyone grew up the same. I never really knew the difference.

I just assumed that everyone was equal. Poverty can be a deep cycle that has far-reaching consequences; however with the help of my teachers I was able to break the cycle.

This was my truth because my teachers valued who I was and made me feel special. Most importantly they helped me realize that I could become whatever I set my mind to. My teachers provided me with a stable and secure environment that was nurturing and loving.

My teachers made me believe in myself. I honor and respect the teaching profession, not just because I was a teacher and still consider myself to be a teacher, but because they made a difference in my life.

When I became the first in my family to graduate from college I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I began my career as a teacher, and then became a principal, and now I am a superintendent. I have learned that when you surround yourself with others who lift you up, you will succeed.

Renee Garrett is superintendent of schools in Forestville Central School.
