A civic lesson

Submitted Photo: North Collins Town Supervisor John Tobia, in the back, spoke to Donna Reiman’s fourth-grade class. The class needed to fulfill a civic requirement, so why not start with the town board? Tobia taught the class the difference between a service (e.g. police, fire departments, highway) job in the public sector and private-sector jobs and how the service jobs are paid for by taxes, with the private sector, in part, supplying tax dollars. At the end of the lesson, Tobia gave the class small pins, signifying they were honorary town councilmen and councilwomen for the day.
