Dunkirk Library seeks minor bump in budget

The Dunkirk Public Library is gearing up for its annual election on Tuesday.

For the first time since its inception, the library is seeking a minor increase in its budget — $8,000, or 2.2 percent. That would bring the fiscal spending plan to $358,000.

“Largely, it is helping us with the minimum wage increase,” Library Director Janice Dekoff noted. “There’s a few other things, but that’s the biggest.”

For the board of trustees, two three-year terms are up for grabs; those terms begin in July. Incumbents Lisa Forbes and Nancy Tuggle are seeking to extend their time on the board.

Qualified voters must reside in the Dunkirk City School District. There will be a space to write in a candidate’s name on the ballot if a voter so chooses.

The polling site is open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the handicap-accessible library at 536 Central Ave.

Parking is available behind the library and can be accessed on East Sixth Street.

Voters in the city school district approved the creation of a school district public library in June 2015. The Dunkirk Free Library officially became the Dunkirk Public Library in January 2016.

Library officials got the ball rolling on the initiative due to dwindling revenues and drastic cuts. The library now collects taxes on property owners to sustain its budget.
