Aspiring area sailors have a new opportunity to apply for sailing lesson scholarships.

Announced earlier this month at the Lawson Boating Heritage Center, the David S. Lawson Jr. Scholarship Award provides financial assistance for youth and adults participating in summer sailing lessons through Jamestown Community College’s continuing education program.

Lawson, the scholarship’s namesake, is a Chautauqua County native credited with decades of contributions to the local boating and marina industry.

Opened to the public in 2012, the Lawson Center is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the area’s rich boating history.

Funding for the David S. Lawson Jr. Scholarship Award is supported by a grant from the Holmberg Foundation and individual Lawson Center member donations.
