ECWA extends water restrictions until Aug. 17

DERBY — The Erie County Water Authority is once again extending water restrictions for several communities in the Southtowns following a water main break at their Sturgeon Point facility.

Residents are being asked not to water their lawns or wash their cars. The restrictions remain in place until Thursday, Aug. 17.

Municipalities included in the restrictions are the town and village of Hamburg; the town and village of Orchard Park; the town of Aurora; the village of East Aurora; the towns of Colden, Boston, Eden, Evans, Brant and Hanover; the villages of Angola, Farnham Silver Creek and the Seneca Indian reservation.

“As we expected, removing high voltage electrical utilities buried over the leak area caused several unique challenges,” Chairman Robert Anderson said in a statement. “Due to the careful and expert work of our staff and contractors, this has been resolved safely and we’re moving forward with the repair.”

Customers in the affected areas may experience low water pressure, but the ECWA says there is no need to boil water or take any other precautions.

The Erie County Fair in Hamburg, which annually draws close to a million visitors, say the situation is not expected to impact the fair when it opens on Wednesday, despite the voluminous amount of water needed to tend to livestock and accommodate the washroom needs of all the attendees.
