Accidental hunting shooting kills Sherman woman

SHERMAN — An investigation into the apparent hunting accident that claimed the life of a Sherman woman is ongoing and charges are expected.

On Wednesday, Deputies and Sherman firefighters were summoned to the area of 2998 Armenian Road around 5:25 p.m. First responders found 43-year-old Rosemary Billquist of Sherman with a single gunshot wound. She was taken to UPMC Hamot hospital in Erie, Pa., where she died of her injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said late Wednesday.

According to police, Billquist was reportedly walking her dogs when she was shot by Thomas B. Jadlowski, 34, also of Sherman, who told investigators he thought he saw a deer in the field.

Jadlowski fired single shot from a pistol from about 200 yards away that struck Billquist. After hearing a scream, Jadlowski rushed to the aid of Billquist, applied pressure to her wound and called 911.

Deputies said Jadlowski took the shot after sunset. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, hunting hours are sunrise to sunset. Jadlowski reportedly is cooperating with police.

Environmental Conservation Officers and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office are leading the investigation and are in the process of reconstructing the crime scene to determine charges against Jadlowski.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Billquist family for their loss in this unfortunate time,” said Sean Mahar of the NYS DEC in press release.

A vigil for Billquist, a beloved member of the community, was held in Sherman on Thursday.
