CASAC’s 17th annual poster contest announced

“Be a thinker, not a drinker” is the theme for the 2018 poster contest sponsored by Chautauqua Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council (CASAC). All Chautauqua County students in grades 3 through 12 are invited to participate in the contest. Youth are asked to design a poster that expresses this theme. Details about the contest were mailed to all county schools and youth agencies, and additional information with instructions can be found on CASAC’s website, www.casacweb.org.

The purpose of this contest is to bring awareness to the issues surrounding underage drinking. While designing a poster, students will be encouraged to think about the many consequences underage drinking has. This includes physical, mental and legal consequences.

This is the 17th year for the contest and is divided into three levels for judging: Category I includes grades 3, 4 and 5; Category II includes grades 6, 7 and 8; and Category III includes grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.

Because of the large number of posters entered, all entries will go through a pre-judging process prior to the Award Ceremony, which is scheduled for April 11. The remaining 12 finalists, four in each category, will compete for the honors of Grand Prize, which includes a $100 cash prize. Additional prizes in each category will also be awarded: $50 for first place in each category, $25 for second place in each category and $20 for third place in each category. The two remaining finalists will each receive Honorable Mention.

Following the award ceremony, all poster entries will be displayed for the public to view. They will be divided for display between the Prendergast Library and the Darwin Barker Library in Fredonia. Finally, the 2018 Grand Prize poster will be professionally framed and will join the other sixteen posters.

The deadline to submit posters is Friday, March 16. Posters can be dropped off before March 16 at the Prendergast Library, the Darwin Barker Library, the Mayville Library or at either CASAC office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CASAC offices are located at 501 W. Third St., Suites 3 and 4 Sprinchorn Building, Jamestown or at 51 E. Third St., Suite 2, Dunkirk. Contest rules are available online at www.casacweb.org or by calling either CASAC office.

Since 1974, CASAC, a United Way partner agency, has provided prevention education and community awareness regarding alcohol and other drugs. CASAC is the only New York State Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) approved and supported alcohol and other drug prevention agency in Chautauqua County. For further information about CASAC programs and services, call the Jamestown office at 664-3608, or the Dunkirk office at 366-4623, or go to CASAC’s website, www.casacweb.org.
