Revitalize Dunkirk’s 2018 season of meetings and activities begins this Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room at the SUNY Fredonia Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk, and will feature invited guest speaker Dr. James Tracy, superintendent of the Dunkirk public schools.

Interested area residents are welcome to attend Dr. Tracy’s presentation, “Dunkirk City School District: The Road to Academic Excellence,” describing the district’s current status and a vision of where it is going, including the actions taken to date and what still needs to be done for the children of our community.

During the business portion of the meeting to follow, Revitalize Dunkirk’s recently elected Board of Directors will be introduced and reports given on various upcoming projects and events.

Revitalize Dunkirk began in 2014 as informal meetings of concerned citizens who gathered to brainstorm and plan, often inviting representatives from relevant organizations to learn about useful grants, programs and strategies, as well as other community improvement groups’ struggles and successes.

Eventually, in order to cover basic operational expenses and facilitate fundraising for projects of greatest concern, a core group of regular attendees and volunteers acted on the advice of several mentor/activists to apply for 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, which was achieved in late 2017.

From the beginning, the group’s mission has been to advocate ideas for improved urban living to residents and elected city officials. Concerns include preserving Dunkirk’s historic heritage, enhancing its physical infrastructure, reinvigorating commerce and boosting community pride and vision.

Members actively engage with city officials and employees, contributing ideas for promoting our area’s natural assets and enhancing amenities to attract more visitors. They also are passionate about participating in urban planning to promote a more healthful and active community.

Revitalize Dunkirk promotes projects to beautify the community through public landscaping and art, as well as code enforcement, with a goal of enhancing business, tourism and residential opportunities.

Hoped-for results are a renewal of community pride, reinvigorating residents and encouraging all sectors to engage in the city’s revitalization. With increased civic participation, Revitalize Dunkirk envisions a vibrant, safe and attractive community that will one day realize its full potential through enhanced business, tourism and housing opportunities.

Revitalize Dunkirk meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the conference room at the SUNY Fredonia Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

Area residents and representatives of organizations who share the group’s goals and vision and wish to share constructive ideas for improving life in the community are welcome to attend. For more information, contact: RevitalizeDunkirk@gmail.com.
