New deputy election commissioner named

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County Democratic Election Commissioner Norman P. Green announced the promotion of Luz Torres of Dunkirk to the position of deputy democratic election commissioner.

Torres has worked for the county since 2011 and is the board’s Spanish language interpreter, processes voter registrations and directs poll site operations in the Jamestown and the south county area.

She replaces Doris Parment, who was forced to leave the board due to sickness, according to Green. He pointed out that Torres and part-time elections office employee Lillian Divine have been key staffers in the federal compliance requirement to provide Spanish language voting materials and access to Spanish language voters in Jamestown and Dunkirk.

“Doris Parment, our neighbor and our friend, has lived in our community for the past 55 years and worked at the Board of Elections for over 10 years. During that time, she had helped all of us any time we’ve asked and even when we didn’t ask. Now, due to sickness, Doris has been forced to retire from her job with the county. Doris is now having to figure out ways to cover her ever mounting health care costs. Doris is way too proud to ask for our help; but she needs us,” said Green. He added, friends wishing to contribute to help Parment, may mail donations of any size to Doris Parment Benefit Account, C/O Greater Chautauqua FCU, 41 S. Erie St. Mayville, NY 14757

“We are sad that Doris is not working with us every day,” said Green. “Luz Torres has big shoes to fill. I am confident that she is up to the task.”
