Gauging the lake

OBSERVER Photo by Nicole Gugino Councilman-at-Large Andy Woloszyn holds an example picture of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration federal lake level gauge that was approved at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting for Dunkirk’s harbor. He described it as “sleek and unobtrusive.” DPW Director Randy Woodbury said Dunkirk has a history of having a lake gauge since 1836 when Gen. George Gordon Meade established one there before winning the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. He added the technology is essential for navigation and will help area boaters.
