Dunkirk man, wanted on warrants, nabbed with drugs

A Dunkirk resident, who had an arrest warrant issued by Jamestown court, is in additional hot water after being witnessed by the Fredonia Police Department in the area of Walmart on Bennett Road.

Officers observed the suspect, Merle Smith, 36, of 532 Deer St., as he was entering his vehicle today around 2:30 a.m. An officer’s inquiry revealed Smith possessed a valid arrest warrant issued by the city of Jamestown Court.

The subsequent vehicle stop, and investigation led to the arrest of Smith for the charges of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, and operating with a loud exhaust. Smith was found to be in possession of a significant amount of Crystal methamphetamine, a scale and packing materials associated with street level drug sales. Smith was transported to the Fredonia Police Department and held pending arraignment.

Smith was arraigned in the Village of Fredonia Court and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail on $10,000 cash or $20,000 property bail. Smith also possesses warrants issued by the city of Jamestown Court for violation of probation for endangering the welfare of a child, and an arrest warrant issued by the County of Warren, in the state of Pennsylvania for the charge of burglary.
