June Class set for CHRIC Homeownership

MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation & Improvement Corporation, CHRIC, continues its 40th anniversary year celebration by focusing on CHRIC’s Homeownership Education Programs during National Homeownership Month.

In 2000, CHRIC developed its Homeownership Education program for First Time Homebuyers under the direction of John D. Murphy and Mayra Alvarado. Over the past 18 years, CHRIC has closed on 295-plus mortgages with an investment of $14,668,702 in Chautauqua County. CHRIC has administered funds through Private Funders, Federal Home Loan Bank of New York and Community Development Block Grants from the city of Dunkirk, city of Jamestown and Chautauqua County, the First Time Homebuyer’s cost shares, and NeighborWorks America.

This program continues to operate under the direction of Josh Freifeld, CHRIC executive director and Mayra Alvarado, CHRIC homeownership program manager. CHRIC works with local partners through the First Home Club: Community Bank, N.A., Lake Shore Savings Bank, M & T Bank and through Northwest Savings Bank’s First Front Door Program. Other local partners are Key Bank, Bank of America and USDA going forward CHRIC will also be working with 1st Priority Mortgage, Inc.

June is National Homeownership Month and CHRIC has schedule an educational class to be held Saturday, June 23 at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. which will be taught in Spanish.

CHRIC is closing out its funding through the city of Dunkirk’s FY 2016 CDBG Homeownership grant and will be getting ready to implement the second round of funding through the cities FY 2018 CDBG Homeownership grant this summer. Through this grant eligible participants are able to receive up to $3,000 to help with down payment and closing costs.

Since 2000, CHRIC has also branched out to help municipalities seek funding for Community Development projects such as Main Street Revitalization Programs and Historic Preservation efforts, as well as developing a Acquisition, Rehab & Resale Program. CHRIC will provide more details on these programs in the next quarter.
