Let the dredging begin
Large ships and heavy equipment from Dean, Marine and Excavating Inc., out of Detroit, Michigan, have entered area waters to dredge the Barcelona and Dunkirk harbors. The ships could be spotted off the Dunkirk Pier on Tuesday. The harbor projects are authorized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and each dredging project will assist in correcting safety issues and prevent negative economic impacts locally and regionally. The federal channel at the Dunkirk Harbor has not been dredged since 2009. In May 2017, U.S. Rep. Tom Reed announced that the Barcelona Harbor project received $675,000 in federal funds while the Dunkirk Harbor received over $1 million.
