Seneca Party Caucus set for Friday
IRVING, SALAMANCA — The Seneca Party announced that it will hold its party caucus this Friday to select the party’s slate of candidates for the upcoming Seneca Nation elections in November.
Seneca Party members can vote in the caucus from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Party members on the Cattaraugus Territory may vote at the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation Volunteer Fire Department building on Route 438 in Irving, and members on the Allegany Territory may vote at Seneca Party headquarters on Broad Street in Salamanca.
A record 73 candidates for various offices will appear on the caucus ballot, including 32 declared candidates for eight seats on the Seneca Nation Council. The caucus also includes two former Presidents from the Allegany Territory again seeking the Nation’s highest elected office, with current Nation Councilor Rickey Armstrong Sr. facing current Nation Treasurer Maurice A. John, Sr.
The current President, Todd Gates, is a candidate for Treasurer, and will face Matthew Pagels on the caucus ballot. Pauline “Snap” John, a former Nation Clerk, and Bethany Johnson are the caucus candidates for Clerk. In addition to the executive and Council positions, the caucus ballot also includes candidates for several other Nation offices.
“This is the largest field of candidates we have had for a caucus in the 34-year history of the Seneca Party,” said Scott Snyder, the eight-time Seneca Party Chairman. “The people of the Seneca Party are as strong and energized as for any election in our Nation’s recent history. We’ve had hundreds of supporters at every meeting over the past several months. We’re ready to select a slate of candidates who will work to ensure the sovereignty, unity and prosperity of the Seneca Nation and all Seneca people.”
Snyder said he expects over 1,700 party members to vote in the caucus, which would be a record turnout. A total of 1,540 Seneca Party members participated in the 2016 caucus prior to the Seneca Nation’s last election. In that election, the full slate of Seneca Party candidates were elected to office, with Gates more than doubling the vote total of the next closest candidate in the election for President.
