Drugs, weapons lead to charges for Jamestown man

JAMESTOWN — Drugs and weapons were discovered during a search of a city residence, the Jamestown Police Department announced.

Facing a host of charges is 28-year-old James E. Smouse after members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force executed a search warrant Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Smouse’s 1107 Prendergast Ave. home. The search occurred “after an investigation revealed that illegal narcotics were being trafficked from the residence,” Jamestown police said.

Entry was made with help of the Jamestown SWAT Team, at which time Smouse was taken into custody. A search turned up 19 grams of crystal methamphetamine, Suboxone and multiple items of drug paraphernalia, including scales.

Investigators also found a switchblade knife and a baton club during the search.

Smouse was taken into custody and was awaiting arraignment. He was charged with third- and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

According to Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department, officers also recovered a guitar in the home later confirmed to be stolen. Samuelson said the guitar, valued at about $1,500, was likely stolen to be sold for drugs. As a result, Smouse is also facing a charge of felony fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Anyone with information regarding the illegal sales or trafficking of narcotics is asked to call Jamestown police at 483-TIPS (8477) or through the Tips 411 cellphone app. All information is kept confidential.
