Dunkirk Memorial Unit 62 plans spring events

President Audrey Miga called the meeting of Dunkirk Memorial Unit 62 to order on Tuesday , April 9. In the absence of the chaplain, Dawn Ransom read the opening prayer. Those in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Auxiliary Constitution.

Miga thanked the members for all their help with the successful American Legion’s 100th anniversary celebration in March. Nominations of officers 2019-20 are now being accepted; election of officers will be held at the May meeting with installation to follow in June. Unit 62 is proud to announce that Dunkirk High School Junior Emily Dudzic will be attending the American Legion Auxiliary 2019 Empire Girls State Program in Brockport.

Secretary Pat Ambrose read the minutes from the March 12 meeting, which were approved as read. In the treasurer’s absence, Miga presented the treasurer’s report, which was entered in the minutes and filed for audit.

Membership Chair Dawn Ransom reported that 2019-20 auxiliary dues are still being accepted. Applications are available at the Post; help us meet our goal.

Committee reports included:

¯ Americanism Chair Pat Kibbe collected information on flags flown, voting, Pledge of Allegiance recited and using flag stamps.

¯ Community Service Chair Dawn Ransom collected data for members who volunteered at church, nursing homes, working with disabled persons, and assisting at Special Olympics, as well as the many hours spent on the 100th Anniversary of the Legion celebration. Donations made both monetary and to the Salvation Army and Vietnam Veterans were counted.

¯ Historian Jean Sutton is collecting Auxiliary articles and pictures for 2018-2019 president’s book.

¯ Leadership Chair Audrey Miga encouraged members to attend the upcoming Auxiliary Eighth District Spring Conference on April 27 at Post 62.

¯ National Security Chair Janet Jagoda is collecting comics and can tabs for veterans, which can be dropped off at the Post. She also reported that the poppies have been delivered and will be distributed Memorial Day weekend, May 24, 25, and 26 at local stores. Members are encouraged to help.

¯ Public Relations Chair Dawn Ransom is clipping and reporting on Unit 62 auxiliary articles, pictures.

¯ Secretary Pat Ambrose read letters from Dunkirk High School Boosters, City of Dunkirk Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix 2019, and the Eighth District American Legion Convention Chair requesting donations, which were discussed and approved.

Upcoming events at the Post include:

¯ Eighth District Auxiliary Annual Spring Conference will be held at Post 62 on Saturday, April 27. Registration is $15 per person and begins at 9 a.m., meeting begins at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. All auxiliary members are encouraged to attend.

¯ Friday, May 24 is National Poppy Day, which honors the lives that were lost in the Wars. Please support our veterans.

¯ Memorial Day Weidner’s Annual Chicken BBQ will be held on May 27 beginning at noon. Tickets are $10 ($12 at the door) and are available at the Post. Volunteers are needed. Basket raffle items are being accepted and can be dropped off at the Post.

¯ The 81st annual Eighth District American Legion Convention will be held at Post 62 on Saturday, June 15.

¯ The Post 62 Annual Car and Bike Show will be held on Friday, June 28, from 5 to 9 p.m. Contact Craig Sutton at 366-8579 for more information.

In conjunction with the American Legion’s 100th anniversary, Post 62 is still offering ceiling tiles in memory/honor of veterans and family members who served in the military. The next unit meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Election of officers will be held and members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Dawn Ransom offered the closing prayer and the meeting was adjourned.
