Evans police chief set to retire after four decades

OBSERVER Photo by Bradley Dankert Town of Evans Police Chief Ernest P. Masullo will retire on Friday.

ANGOLA — After 40 years of service to the region in law enforcement, Town of Evans Police Chief Ernest Masullo is ready for a next generation: his grandchildren.

Masullo is retiring on Friday from a job he loves.

In his position as chief of police, he oversees 29 officers for a department that focuses on Evans as well as Angola.

Masullo trained at the Erie County Police Academy in 1977. The village of Angola originally hired him before he graduated from the police academy as an officer for them. However, after he graduated from the police academy, the town of Evans was looking to hire a full-time deputy and Masullo applied and received the position.

He has 39 years with the town of Evans and one year with the Erie County Sheriff’s Department.

So, what is he going to miss most about a job that protects the public and keeps many safe?

“The everyday business of dealing with the public,” Masullo said. “The public is great and they’ve been great to me.”

Masullo’s last board meeting is today and his last day as chief will be Friday.

Masullo is looking forward to retirement, and spending more time with his four grandchildren.

They range from ages 5  to 10.
