Fredonia to scrutinize water quality issues

The mystery surrounding what makes some Fredonia households’ potable water discolor may soon be cleared up.

The village board recently approved an agreement with O’Brien & Gere Engineer Inc. of Syracuse to investigate water quality issues in the distribution system at the water treatment plant, at a cost of $9,800.

Officials say the study is necessary to figure out why water turns a red hue in the vicinities of Middlesex Drive, Holmes Place and Newton Street.

“That study (covers) James Place, down that area of the village,” village Administrator Richard St. George explained. “So the north end of the village, so James Place, Cottage Street and Carol (Avenue) and then Middlesex. They’re going to take into consideration all of that area.”

The engineering study will evaluate the existing distribution system’s water chemistry; review the existing corrosion inhibitor feed system and operation; and provide recommendations on future steps for the village.

A letter of resignation was accepted from Brandon Hite, part-time police officer.

The board amended a previously passed resolution stipulating the rate of pay for the hiring of two part-time police officers, increasing the hourly wage from $12.25 to $14.

The board thanked the Chadwick Bay Garden Club for its donation of wreaths for Village Hall and the Bud & Bloom Garden Club for its donation of bows for the Barker Common gazebo.
