WESTFIELD — “The Polar Express,” pajamas, crafts and a surprise visit from the Grinch added up to a very merry morning recently at Westfield’s Patterson Library.

Kids and their parents turned out in force — and in their pajamas — for a reading and screening of “The Polar Express,” the beloved holiday story by Chris Van Allsburg.

Before the movie, kids were treated to an array of activities and crafts, including plastic-spoon snowmen and do-it-yourself snow globes. Even the snacks had a train theme, with ladyfinger cookies invoking railroad crossings with red and green M&Ms for lights.

The Grinch made an appearance early on (the Patterson has hosted a Grinchfest for the past few years), as did Santa and Mrs. Claus. When the time came for the movie, the Conductor from “Polar Express” was on hand to punch tickets as kids entered the Patterson’s Octogon Gallery.

Amy Stephenson, Patterson Library’s children’s program leader, read the story before screening the 2004 motion-capture film adaptation.
