Fredonia native works parade security

Officer Kelley Fisher-Masten

Officer Kelley Fisher-Masten had a not-so ordinary Friday. Though like many others, she went to work, saw a plethora of people, but also got to see the 45th president of the United States Donald J. Trump at his inauguration.

Fisher-Masten, formerly of Fredonia, now of Sarasota, Fla., described her day to the OBSERVER.

“I woke up at 1 a.m., had a small briefing, got on the bus at 3 o’clock and we were at our post at about 5 a.m. And we just got back to the hotel right now,” she said at around 8 p.m. “It’s been a long day.”

On social media, videos spiked to prominence once again. Protestors turned to rioters and businesses and buildings took the brunt. However, Fisher-Masten did not encounter worst of the defiant acts.

“We had a few protestors,” she said. “Everything that took place that you’re probably seeing on the news was about a block away from me. But we had pretty peaceful (people) where I was stationed on the parade route.”

National Guard and D.C. police officers were also present with riot gear as they prepared for the best and worst. Fisher-Masten noted that it was a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Fisher-Masten was selected by her police department as a participating officer for the parade’s security. The event was a conglomerate of officers from around the United States.

“We had 3,200 officers outside of the D.C. area that travelled from all over,” Fisher-Masten said. “So that was just incredible to have that many law enforcement officers and I know that President Trump and Vice President Pence support the law enforcement and we appreciate that. So it was an honor to work this.”
