Central Connection looks for community input

The connection between Dunkirk, Fredonia and SUNY Fredonia will hopefully deepen as the community is asked to become more involved in the three entities’ cooperation.

For a year, leaders from Dunkirk, Fredonia, and the college have been working together on a project to bring more visitors to the area and to stay longer to explore.

The three entities were awarded a technical assistance grant from the University at Buffalo Regional Institute in March 2016, which developed a roadmap for projects that build a sense of shared identity.

The study is available online at www.facebook.com/centralaveconnection.

The group held a brainstorming session at SUNY Fredonia in November and is now coming to Dunkirk for more ideas from residents.

“This is the second in a series of meetings that we are organizing with the city of Dunkirk and SUNY Fredonia. The idea again is how to present our area, present our common things, present our strengths so that we can attract tourists, so we can attract new businesses, so we can attract new families,” Fredonia Mayor Athanasia Landis explained. “We keep talking about consolidations and savings and all of this is very good. However, nobody is going to move here because we consolidated two departments. People are going to move here because we offer them something and this something can come out of the good cooperation between the city and the village with the help of SUNY. We are inviting people to help us with ideas on how would be a good way to do this. All ideas and all discussions are on the table.”

The meeting will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Dunkirk High School gym. All are invited to attend. More information on the Central Connection, study and the meeting are on the Facebook page.
