Sinclairville fire intentionally set

SINCLAIRVILLE — An ongoing Chautauqua County Sheriff’s investigation has revealed that a Wednesday night blaze in the village of Sinclairville was intentionally set.

Investigator Joshua Ostrander told the OBSERVER Thursday that while the investigation continues, the incident is being treated as a criminal matter.

“The fire department responded to a fire in a field that was set up like a camp,” he explained. “Two average-sized camper trailers were involved, as well as an (all-terrain vehicle).”

A 911 caller reported the fire at 9 p.m. Wednesday; firefighters were on the scene by 9:05.

The bivouac was configured at Engdahl and Edson roads. Because of the encampment’s distance from the main road, firefighters had to drag out several hundred feet of hoses to extinguish the fire, and use their own ATVs to move back and forth quickly.

Responding fire agencies included Sinclairville, Ellington and Gerry.

The fire was reportedly out by the early morning hours of Thursday.

If citizens know anything about the fire’s origins or the individual(s) responsible, they are asked to call the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office at 753-4232.
