Fredonia high school football merger to enter second year

School officials in Fredonia, Westfield and Brocton are finalizing an updated shared services agreement for the second year of a combined football program.

Fredonia Superintendent Paul DiFonzo informed the board of education Tuesday that an open search was conducted for a head coach. He indicated there could be a coach who is not an employee of one of the three participating school districts, as per new language in the proposed agreement.

“The other thing is … in talking to Westfield and Brocton, we’re hopeful that we can do all the games in one facility, which would be at Brocton’s football facility,” DiFonzo added. “One team, one location.”

Board President Michael Bobseine asked if a candidate for head coach will be presented at the next meeting on March 14, to which DiFonzo replied he believes so.

“We’ve already interviewed — and I say we, the administrative team of the three superintendents and the three athletic directors — we interviewed a group of candidates and I believe the ADs are moving forward to offer the position to one of the candidates based on all of our recommendations,” DiFonzo explained.

The previous agreement stipulated the head coach must be an employee of one of the three districts. It also stated at least one game will be played at each school.

Board member Daniel Ihasz asked if the participation level for next year has been gauged yet. DiFonzo said officials estimate at least 40 students at the varsity level and 40 at the junior varsity level.
