GERRY — On Sunday afternoon, when the sun was bright and the temperature at 73 degrees, the annual Gerry Memorial Day Weekend Parade was held.

The parade began at 2 p.m. with many of the participants lining up at the fire hall parking lot, and the firetrucks from Gerry and surrounding towns lining up at the Rodeo Grounds. All traveled along route 60 northward, greeting the many onlookers on both sides of the road.

Jim White portrayed a Revolutionary Soldier in the parade. Valley Historical Society members, Diane K. Shaw and Susan Washington Sipos decorated the historical society’s vehicle and also represented the Jamestown Daughters of the American Revolution.

Memorial Day was set aside in 1868 after the Civil War to remember those who fought in the war. The meaning of the day is for remembering and honoring those who fought to preserve freedom is the reason for Memorial Day.
