Shots fired

Brocton man charged with possession of firearm

Hector J. Camacho Jr.

At last one person was taking shots, not drinking them, according to Dunkirk Police.

Officers responded to the Halas Hotel Bar for a report of a large fight with multiple gunshots around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival to the Second Street establishment, Dunkirk Police, assisted by officers from the Fredonia Police Department, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police, dispersed a reportedly large and unruly crowd in the street outside the bar.

Investigation of the incident led to the identification of a suspect in the gunshots complaint and the seizure of a loaded 9 mm handgun, which was hidden in the bar’s restroom.

Hector J. Camacho Jr., 29, of Brocton, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for the loaded firearm, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and a second count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for possessing a large capacity ammunition feeding device. All of the charges are felonies.

He was taken to Dunkirk Police Lockup, where he is being held without bail pending arraignment in Dunkirk City Court.

Investigation of the incident is continuing and additional arrests are likely.
