Three veterans to be honored Memorial Day

Three area residents are being honored during Dunkirk’s Memorial Day services and parade on Monday.

Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council members announced this week there will be three grand marshals. They include: David Baldwin of Fredonia, Joseph S. Gatto of Brocton and Steve Mastrelli of Dunkirk. All three served in World War II.

Baldwin was a member of the U.S. Army Infantry and served under Gen. George S. Patton and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, which was the last major German offensive campaign. He is married to his wife of 67 years Katherine.

Gatto served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman second class gunners mate aboard the USS Missouri during the Pacific Theater. He aided in the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Gatto also was present aboard the Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces. He is married to his wife, Peg, had five children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mastrelli also served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific as a radio operator from 1944 to 1946. He received Victory in Europe, Victory in Japan and the National Defense medals. He is married to his wife Roberta and has eight children and 38 grandchildren.

Services in Dunkirk will take place at Memorial Park at 10 a.m. The men will be honored at the service and escorted by car in the parade, which is to begin at 11 a.m.
