Fredonia hires engineer for fire hall repairs

OBSERVER Photo by Greg Fox. The failed stucco finish on the Fredonia Fire Hall’s hose tower is slowly but surely being addressed.

The village of Fredonia has gotten the ball rolling on repairs to the failed stucco finish on the fire hall’s hose tower.

Village board members recently approved an $8,000 agreement with the engineering firm Nussbaumer & Clarke Inc. by a unanimous vote. The firm will prepare construction drawings and specifications for the hose tower’s fix, as well as provide assistance to the village associated with the bidding and award of the construction contract.

“They went all the way through managing the project (in their proposal); we actually cut it off at design services,” Village Administrator Richard St. George told the board. “Once you get passed that, then you can go on to the next construction services phase. So there’ll be a second resolution after those are done to approve the second phase of the project, which is, again, construction services. You want somebody on the project who knows what’s supposed to be done, making sure that it’s being done correctly.”

In late February, a section of exterior sheathing fell off the metal stud framing of the hose drying tower. The exposed metal framing is corroded and the fiberglass batt insulation has water damage, according to engineers, who added there is visible indication of imminent cladding failure at other areas of the building exterior.

The fire hall on West Main Street is over 30 years old and has a history of building issues, particularly when it comes to moisture infiltrating the exterior stucco.

As per the approved agreement, Nussbaumer & Clarke will also update a 2009 report on the fire hall building and develop a cost analysis of repairing the damaged exterior envelope of the fire station, including the sheathing, insulation and metal framing.
