Submerged harvester to be uplifted today, weather permitting

The Chautauqua Lake Association’s submerged vegetation harvester is scheduled to be lifted out of the water today, if the weather permits.

That’s according to Doug Conroe, CLA executive director, who told the OBSERVER on Tuesday that they’ve awarded Lake Erie Towing and Salvage out of Angola with the bid to bring up the vessel. The lake vegetation harvester capsized near the Lakewood shoreline last Tuesday. The harvester took on water as CLA officials were towing it back to headquarters for service.

“We’ve been working with the insurance company and receiving proposals from firms that do this work,” Conroe said. “They’re coming (today) and hopefully it will be taken care of (today).”

Conroe said Lake Erie Towing and Salvage has experience raising a harvester from the water. If the weather permits, Conroe said they should be lifting the vessel out of the water sometime during the morning.

CLA crews spent last week trying to lift the harvester out of the water. Efforts to retrieve the vessel failed. On Thursday, the CLA received assistance from the Chautauqua Water Emergency Team, but those efforts failed as the vessel was too heavy for the flotation equipment being used.
