Central Avenue turkey hit by vehicle, dies

One of Dunkirk’s famous Central Avenue turkeys has apparently passed away as of this morning.

According to a Facebook post by city resident Jill Krzyzanowicz, the male bird was hit by a car this morning. Here is her post:

“Today is a sad day.

“It is confirmed, our Central Avenue feathery friend, Henry, has passed.

“He was injured by a car early this morning and had to be put down.

“I feel as if I have lost a personal pet and I’m sobbing 🙁

“For many, he was entertainment. But for me, he was a spirit animal for months of time during my health concerns. “He has lived in this area for exactly a year now.

“He stayed near our yard until my final surgery was over… to the day… then moved down the street.

“I am hoping they will release his body to me, so that I may preserve his tail feathers in his memory.

“If any of you have connections,

“Please, please help me out!”

Krzyznowicz was featured in an OBSERVER February article on the turkeys. “Everybody knows the Central Avenue turkeys,” she said then. “Everyone who travels up and down this street has seen the turkeys or has had to stop for the turkeys. We just crack up because we will look out the window and people’s cars are pulling over that they’re snapping pictures. We’re not talking about a week or a month this has been going on for months. … I’ve had lots of Facebook posts about the turkeys. If you went to my Facebook page right now, you would see people post pictures of the turkey and they will say ‘Oh Jill we saw your turkey today!'”

One of the turkeys was spotted by the OBSERVER on Thursday evening at Albany and Central avenues. At that time, a driver was calling out to it and the turkey went into the road and had to be avoided by other drivers.
