It’s about the journey

Swim called halfway through voyage

EVANS — A swim across Lake Erie by a State University of New York at Fredonia professor was called midway after a swimmer was lost — but later found — during turbulent waters.

Fredonia professor Dr. Sherri Mason led the charge as she did before when she crossed Chautauqua Lake. Mason and two other swimmers, listed by first name only as Lydia and Fran, began their swim at 9:05 a.m. Sunday at Sturgeon Point Marina in the town of Evans.

The Facebook page Swimming For The Great Lakes announced that the swim was called at around 3 p.m. when it posted, “Event was called. Sam is fine. Another swimmer was lost but has since been found. No Lake Erie crossing but it was more about the journey rather than the destination.”

In June, Mason completed the 15.5-mile swim of Chautauqua Lake from Mayville to Celoron.

The swim across Lake Erie was Mason’s main event, as she aimed to end up in Crystal Beach, Canada, after an eight-hour swim.

“I have spent over one year, over 1 million yards of swim training, all for this one day,” she said in an email before the swim, “and all to raise awareness about our need to protect these amazing bodies of water (especially under the budget cuts consistently being proposed by the Trump administration).”
