Steps to shared service

Portland moves toward greater customer convenience

BROCTON — The Portland Town Board was the recipient of encouraging words from Chautauqua County Legislator Mark O’Dell during their opening of their monthly meeting.

Representing the county executive, he noted that he’s very pleased about the small steps being taken by both the town council and village of Brocton leadership to enter into “consharidation” opportunities, a term first utilized by village of Brocton Trustee Gary Planty.

O’Dell offered the council the opportunity to sit down with County Executive Vince Horrigan and Legislator George Borrello to discuss any further opportunities that might be discussed, or any pathways to receive grant money for exploration of shared services between village and town.

Both entities are putting a call out to their residents to serve on a shared service committee to take a concrete look at any duplication of services that currently exist. The council passed an official resolution at their meeting to move forward with having both town and village code enforcement staffers share a single office space from town hall.

Town Supervisor Dan Schrantz reiterated that the move will not provide cost savings now, but will be a sole customer service move providing a more fully staffed zoning and code enforcement office to the residents that use it. Brocton and Portland’s officers will be sharing an office space at Portland’s Town Hall and will alternate hours, eliminating the need for residents to come back on a day when an officer isn’t in the field working.
