Brooks to announce new site soon

A location for the new Brooks Memorial Hospital has apparently been chosen, but officials at the facility and Kaleida Health in Buffalo have yet to make it official.

Four weeks ago, members of both institutions and TLC Health Network met with area media to discuss the future of the institutions. At that time, Mary E. LaRowe, president and chief executive officer at Brooks, said the community would be made aware of the new site by the end of this month.

As of Thursday evening, there was no word on the new location. Chris Lanski, Brooks board chair, said previously a high traffic and visibility area is important as is proximity to the New York State Thruway and Route 60. “It needs to be nearby to shopping, restaurants and businesses … where all our patients work and shop,” he said. “We have two campuses, so the service providers are going to need to move back and forth … so it needs to be convenient for them as well.”Some of the locations being seen as candidates are Route 60 in the town of Dunkirk as well as locations on Route 20 inside the village of Fredonia near the former Cornell Cooperative Extension facility and in the town of Pomfret close to the Route 60 intersection.

What will happen to the current Brooks location, at Central Avenue and Sixth Streets, is uncertain. However, Kaleida officials say they plan to help in the plans for future use.

New York state, in 2016, has set aside $71 million in funding for the new building.
