Crews battle acid fire at city steel plant

Fire crews from Dunkirk and the HazMat team from Chautauqua County were on the scene of an acid fire at the Dunkirk Specialty Steel plant this morning.

A plume of smoke was visible over Dunkirk around 9:45 this morning after an acid fire at the Universal Specialty Steel off Brigham Road.

Crews from the Dunkirk Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services and HazMat were on the scene around 10:20 to investigate. In the meantime, about more than 1,000 yards of hose was needed in an effort to contain the fire in one of the buildings located in the behind the Brigham Road facility.

Dunkirk police had Brigham Road closed from Willowbrook Avenue to Lucas Avenue.

The report of the fire came in around 9:30. Crews remained on the scene through the afternoon.
