OBSERVER Staff Report

Friday afternoon’s dismissal at Dunkirk High School seemed fairly ordinary. There was one exception, however: added police presence.

Officers and their vehicles could be seen in the morning and afternoon at the school after three Dunkirk High School students were involved in an altercation near Washington Park on Thursday afternoon.

Two of the victims were taken to Brooks Hospital, one with a reported eye injury and the third was flown to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

“As of (Thursday evening) he was in stable condition,” Sgt. Mark Gruber told the OBSERVER regarding the juvenile sent to ECMC.

Asked if there were knives involved, Gruber replied, “It does sound like there was a weapon involved, yes.”

Although no official charges have been handed out, Gruber said “We’re looking to petition two of the subjects to family court and potentially another one to regular Dunkirk City Court.”

There was plenty of discussion on social media about the incident that occurred before 3 p.m.

“We’re still gathering statements,” Gruber said. “We’re trying to talk with as many people as we can that were there so we can do what we need to do correctly. Once we wrap everything up, we’ll put out another press release.”
