Devastation in Puerto Rico touches area Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County has raised $112 that will be donated to the Hurricane Maria relief effort.

This disaster touches close to home for many of its members as well as the Boys & Girls Club Movement. The club in Puerto Rico serves 16,000 youth on a yearly basis and have lost just about everything. When local members were asked how they wanted to help, they came up with a simple idea; a bake sale.

Members came up with an ingredient list, delegated tasks within their works groups and started baking. They made posters to promote their sale and everything they sold was handmade by Torch Club members; a character and leadership Club within its doors.

Bella Aponte, 13, Club member from Fredonia, was asked what she was most proud of: “I was happy to be a part of something bigger than myself,” she responded.

“The excitement that this mini project generated within or Club gives me hope,” said Kate Piazza, Boys & Girls Club executive director. “Hope for Puerto Rico, humanity and for this generation of youth.”
