MAYVILLE — Legislators from across the county recently agreed Julius Leone, Jr. should be honored in a brick-and-mortar kind of way.

At the recent meeting of the County Legislature, the members unanimously approved an emergency resolution proclaiming that the Chautauqua County Emergency Services offices in Mayville will be renamed in honor of Leone, the recently retired Chautauqua County Emergency Services director.

“It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy,” said Legislative Chairman David Himelein.

Legislator PJ Wendel, R-Lakewood, said the honor was much deserved by Leone.

“Julius gave 15 years to Chautauqua County and left an indelible footprint on everything he’s done,” Wendel said. “Not enough can be said, and this is only a fitting tribute. But, it says something to Mr. Leone that prior to last week’s storms, he took one of his last days (on the job) and spent the afternoon with incoming emergency services coordinator John Griffin and toured Chautauqua County. Julius told him where things were going to happen with flooding, how they would happen and everything basically followed it to a ‘T.'”

Wendel said even in leaving, Leone was attempting to keep Chautauqua County and its residents safe.

He said naming the building, located at 2 Academy St. in Mayville, after Leone while he lives is a great tribute to him.

Leone has been very active in emergency services. He has been with the Fredonia Fire Department since 1980, and he was also Chief of Environment and Safety at Brooks Hospital. Currently, Leone is first vice president of the New York State Association of Chiefs and the Fredonia Fire Department’s Lambert Hook and Ladder Company president. Leone retired in October.

A sign bearing the new name is to be put up at the emergency operations offices on 2 Academy St. in Mayville.
