Demolition of old Revere Inn set for December

SILVER CREEK — Mayor Nick Piccolo announced to the village board during a recent meeting that the contractors assigned by the county Land Bank to demolish the old Revere Inn have tentatively scheduled the project for the first or second week of December.

The demolition can’t come soon enough as Piccolo said that some of the plywood covering the back windows and doors of the boarded up building have been pried loose.

“(We think) that someone has been trying to get in,” said Piccolo. “Somebody broke into the back and side door. There’s a narrow enough space it looks like somebody has tried to climb their way in there.”

As the weather turns colder, the unstable building serves as a tempting site for squatters.

“There are areas in the building where it isn’t safe to walk,” Piccolo said.

The demolition project will require a re-routing of traffic the Mayor said, “so no one can come up or down the (Main Street) hill.”

Once the building is demolished and the village gets the expected cooperation from M&T Bank, a new and improved no left-turn sign will be placed at the Main Street (Rt. 20) and Central Ave. intersection.

The village has been strictly enforcing the current no left turn over the last couple of months and many tickets have been issued as as a result. Some drivers have complained that the current sign is inadequate and easily missed.

“We’re waiting for the board of directors from M&T to give us the okay,” Piccolo said. “The Community Bank is all set, so once the Revere Inn is down we’ll be installing a sign over there indicating no left turn.”In other village news, Donna Metzger of the Planning Board updated the trustees and mayor about the sidewalks project.

“I met with the superintendent (Todd Crandall) and people of the County Health Network (recently) on the complete streets and sidewalk project,” Metzger reported. “It was in 2015 that the village passed the complete streets project. They’re going to use that as a guideline.”

Metzger said that Lennea Carlson of the Health Network is planning a meeting with stakeholders regarding the sidewalks project on Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. in the school board room.

The meeting will be about strategizing for another community conversation to be held on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon.

“(The Health Network) would like to get representatives from the planning boards and anybody else to do with the village to get people more active in the village,” Metzger said. “Mr. Crandall said he’d like a group of high school students to walk around (the village) and see what could be improved upon. They want to see more people (at the community conversation meeting). We can get people there, but it’s time to get the kids involved.”
