Lake-effect snows hitting along Route 5

Heavy snow was hitting Dunkirk this afternoon.
Only flurries for Fredonia.

Lake-effect snows and hazardous driving conditions are prevalent along Route 5 from Dunkirk to Silver Creek this afternoon.

About 5 inches of snow has hit the city while conditions are reported much worse in Silver Creek, which had a foot of snow reported by 2:30 p.m. Schools in Silver Creek have canceled all evening activities.

Other schools canceling evening events include: Forestville, Gowanda, Lake Shore Central, North Chautauqua Central School and North Collins Central.

Also postponed for tonight was the high school hockey game between the Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers and Olean at Steele Hall.

A lake-effect snow warning is in effect for Chautauqua County throughout the night as the bands, which were hitting Erie County earlier in the day, shift south.
