Winter weather returns

Winter’s back.

Heavy snows and powerful winds tormented much of Chautauqua County on Thursday evening as road conditions deteriorated and cars slid off the road. The heavy, wet snow also wreaked havoc as tree limbs and power lines fell.

Fredonia Village Police issued a travel advisory around 10 p.m. Thursday due to heavy snow, high winds, downed power lines and tree limbs. Police said the advisory is in place until further notice and drivers should avoid all unnecessary travel within the village.

The National Weather Service out of Buffalo estimated accumulations of 10 to 14 inches for the Dunkirk area and 12 to 17 inches for the Chautauqua Ridge. A winter storm warning issued Thursday continues today as the weather service says additional accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible.
