Three people reported lost found by K-9 unit

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies were called to two separate areas of the Chautauqua Gorge on Saturday for missing person reports.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a missing vulnerable 13-year-old female in the area of Mayville. Deputies were advised that the girl had run away from home and had possibly fled to the area of Chautauqua Gorge on Hannum Road in Mayville.

Deputies arrived at the Gorge campsite area and found evidence that the girl had been in the area. Sheriff’s K9 Bentley was deployed on a human odor track from the campsite.

K9 Bentley tracked from the site and located the girl barefoot in the surrounding wooded area. She did not require medical attention and was returned to her family.

Deputies also responded to a report of a subject lost in the Westfield area of the Chautauqua Gorge watershed Saturday. It was reported that a male subject had entered the trail system on an ATV.

After not returning for some time, the subject had contacted a family member via phone and stated the ATV had become disabled and he became lost while attempting to find his way on foot.

A family member then attempted to locate the subject on foot and subsequently also became lost. A K9 unit deployed K9 Bentley at the trail head to track the subjects. After tracking for approximately one mile, K9 Bentley located both subjects, unharmed.

Neither subject required medical attention and both were returned home.
