A new Fredonia Middle School principal is set to begin her duties July 1.

On Tuesday, the Fredonia Board of Education approved the appointment of Paula Troutman as the next middle school principal. Before approval, Superintendent Jeffrey Sortisio told board members that Troutman has an extensive resume having served as director of curriculum at the Gowanda Central School District and middle school principal at the Silver Creek School District.

Troutman also spent time in Westfield Academy and Central School as elementary principal and director of instruction and at Lake Shore High School as an assistant principal. She also had a stint at the Fredonia Central School District having served as interim assistant principal at the high school a while back. She was also a teacher at Pine Valley.

Sortisio acknowledged that a search committee comprised of teachers, staff and parents focused on finding an excellent communicator, who’s passionate about the district and had administrative experience. In addition, the committee sought a candidate who’s approachable, is a fair and consistent problem solver and is willing to create a culture of high expectations.

“By all accounts, Ms. Paula Troutman checks all of these boxes,” Sortisio said. “She’s excited to be at the building level because that’s where the students are.”

Following the board’s approval, Troutman said she’s glad to be back in the district.

“I was here for a short time and I am so happy and looking forward to working with parents and students and staff to really create a great team and continue the excellence that we know Fredonia is known for,” she said. “Thank you for trusting me and I promise to give my very best to carry on the great tradition.”

Board President Michael Bobseine said they’re excited to have her as part of the administrative team.

“It really is an exciting district we all believe, and one that we’re proud of enough and know that we can do better and want to better in so many ways to benefit our students,” he said.

Troutman’s salary is $112,500 for the 2018-19 school year. With Troutman coming on board in July, Interim Middle School Principal Rachel Badger’s time at the district will come to an end. The board and Sortisio both expressed gratitude for her service to the middle school.

“You’re passion about our district, about that middle school, about the teachers and students is so apparent when you talk about Fredonia school,” Sortisio said. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that.”

On behalf of the board, Bobseine thanked Badger for all she did. Bobseine noted that Badger came into the district during a difficult and challenging time.

“We really appreciate the element of character and leadership and care that you attended to our middle school and our district. We thank you and we’re going to miss you.”
