Porch plants being snatched

OBSERVER Photo by Damian Sebouhian A number of Dunkirk residents have been complaining about their front porch plants being stolen during the night. Most of them have been hanging plants like this one shown here.

Complaints are on the rise over plants being stolen off porches in Dunkirk over the last two weeks.

“I went out in the morning on Tuesday at 11 a.m., looked up at the front of the house, and it was gone,” said Mrs. Kozlowski. “I asked my husband ‘What did you do to that plant that was hanging there?’ ‘I didn’t do nothing,’ he said. It was probably stolen at night.” Kozlowski said the pot, which consisted of petunias and other multi-colored flowers, cost around $30 and added that she knew other people who had their plants stolen.

“They’re even taking them from the cemetery,” she said.

Mrs. Kozlowski said that her husband checked at the Dunkirk Farmers Market on Wednesday to see if there was anyone selling the pilfered hanging plants “but there was nobody.”

A resident on Margay Street said she had a planter with flowers stolen from her front porch steps recently; and a resident on Lakeshore Drive reported that her friend had a basket stolen as well.

Author and OBSERVER columnist Vicki Westling received the initial reports and subsequently notified the Dunkirk Police Department.

The DPD said Westling’s was the only report they received.

Other than saying that night time patrols have been increased, the DPD had no further comment on the situation.
