Dayton accident victim comes forward

DAYTON — The owner of the vehicle that was involved in the accident with Dayton Highway Supervisor Brian Taber last winter, came forward at the August Dayton Town Board meeting.

Robert Wright, of Peck Hill Cottage Road told his side of the story of the incident that transpired on March 2.

“I was on my way home from work (and) every road was plowed except for Peck Hill Cottage Road,” Wright started. “I called (a relative) up, who has a four-wheel drive and what we were doing was attempting to follow him to get to our driveway on Peck Hill Cottage Road. I didn’t make it.”

He then went on to discuss that when he got stuck, they tried to pull his vehicle out with his truck, but had no luck. Concerned, Wright left his car where it was and went home where he made several phone calls.

“I phoned town of Dayton, no answer, there’s no answering machine. I didn’t know who to call, so I called town of Perrysburg. (He) had Mr. Taber’s cell phone number and that he would call him and then I also called the Cattaraugus County Police Department to let them know my car was there,” Wright said.

Wright called a towing service as well, but they told him they couldn’t come out in the weather. Following the collision that happened later, Wright was told various stories about what transpired from Taber’s end that night.

“I heard of what transpired (and it) is a little upsetting to me. It was said, hearsay, to the superintendent of Perrysburg, that Mr. Taber said ‘(expletive) I’ll just hit it’, and he did– not once but twice, and it didn’t just break the window, they totaled my car,” Wright irritably stated.

Wright later had to purchase his car back from the insurance company and also had to pay a $500 deductible. He asked the board respectfully for the reimbursement of the deductible only and not the out-of-pocket costs for repairs.

The board went into executive session to discuss that further, and following their return, they informed Wright that due to litigation aspects, the information and story had to be put on the record and that they were going to connect with their insurance company.
