OBSERVER Staff Report

An early Sunday morning fire on West Fourth Street left a dog dead and heavily damaged the first floor of a residence.

Dunkirk firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 32 W. Fourth St. at 1:32 a.m. Upon arrival fire crews found fire burning on the first floor and venting from a window.

It was reported that no residents were home but pets were inside. Crews advanced a hose line to the first floor and quickly extinguished a fast moving fire. Firefighters removed a cat from the house that was alive and found a deceased dog.

Firefighters held the fire within the room of origin but it was heavily damaged by heat and smoke. One commenter to the OBSERVER Facebook page lamented the blaze, noting the owner had been working in recent months on improving and investing in the property.

East Dunkirk Fire Department stood by with personnel at the scene and Fredonia Fire stood by at Fire Headquarters.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
