Landis finds hope in audit

A letter in today’s OBSERVER from Fredonia Mayor Athanasia Landis states the village is “heading in the right direction” and is fiscally stable.

Landis, in the letter published on the Opinion page today, also takes aim at the former village administrator though she does not name him. Richard St. George resigned from that position in July after 12 years.

“Although finding money is always good, it is also proof of gross mismanagement of public funds,” Landis wrote of a recent audit.

In her letter, the mayor and Village Board — through an audit — has learned:

¯ There is $1.3 million available in the capital project fund.

¯ The village’s fund balance exceeds recommended levels.

¯ The State University of New York at Fredonia was underbilled $140,000 for water and sewer service. “It is only one of several arbitrary decisions on the part of the former administrator,” she wrote.

¯ A proposed Pomfret-Portland-Dunkirk Sewer District contract would have reduced revenues to the village by $60,000.

“These latest facts reveal that without checks and balances or any reasonable level of transparency, it is the taxpayers who ultimately suffer,” she said.
