Winifred Odes Shepard
Winifred Odes Shepard passed away at the Chautauqua County Nursing and Rehab Center on Nov. 17 2016 at the age of 87. Winnie was born and brought up in Brooklyn, NY and attended Indiana University and Brooklyn College. She married Douglas Shepard in September 1950. They both received their PhDs from the University of Iowa, where Winnie also became a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
They moved to Fredonia in 1962. Winnie taught psychology at SUNY Fredonia from 1969 until her retirement in 1985. She produced a number of scholarly articles on child psychology and language acquisition in children.
Locally, Winnie was active in the League of Women Voters and the Coterie book club, but will be best known for her instrumental role in the creation and successful operation of the Fredonia Preservation Society, serving two terms as its first president, and acting as the liaison with governmental agencies and the Village of Fredonia. Her efforts were vital to the successful preservation and restoration of the Fredonia Opera House.
She is survived by her husband Doug, children Michael and Allyson, grandchildren Meredith, Rebecca and Mark and her sister Louise Odes Neaderland.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of the Chautauqua County Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care they provided throughout Winnie’s stay there.
A memorial get together will be held at the Fredonia Opera House on 24 June 2017. Donations to the Opera House or Native American educational charities in Winnie’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
Arrangements by the LarsonTimko Funeral Home and David J. Dengler.
