Nancy C (Acquavia) St. George

Nancy C. (Acquavia) St. George, formerly a resident at Fredonia Place, died late Sunday evening, March 12, 2017 at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, NY.

Nancy was born on November 25, 1926 to the late Rocco and Angeline Acquavia. She graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1945. Following graduation, Nancy worked as a cashier at the former A&P and various other grocery stores in Dunkirk/Fredonia and Silver Creek.

In 1950, she and Sam R. St. George were married at Holy Trinity Church in Dunkirk, NY with her late brother, Monsignor Paschal Acquavia officiating as the celebrant for their Wedding Mass.

During her lifetime, Nancy was an active member of the community. In 1971, she was crowned Queen of the Fredonia Farm Festival. Dancing with Sam was one of the great pleasures of her life. They belonged to a ballroom dance group and enjoyed performing their exhibition dancing at various nursing homes and the Fredonia Opera House. She also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Fredonia, Share & Care as well as the United Seniors organizations.

For over 35 years Nancy and Sam owned and operated St. Gorge’s Farm Market in Sheridan, NY. Besides being a great cook, she enjoyed making homemade jam and freezing fruits and vegetables.

They were blessed with twin daughters in 1959, one of whom survives, Dianne (Michael) Ferguson. Nancy adored her grandchildren: Rhonda (Brian) Baumgardner from South Carolina and Andrew Sam from TN, Lindsey Anne from New York City, Olivia Michelle living at home and Kelly (Michael) Moore from Buffalo. She also had three greatgrandchildren: Shiloh Baumgardner, Lillian and Henry Moore. Watching her grandchildren grow gave her great joy. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren playing soccer, baseball and dance recitals and was so grateful that she could attend her first granddaughter’s wedding.

Nancy enjoyed bingo, watching TV game shows, college football and the Buffalo Bills, solving crossword puzzles, and doing jigsaw puzzles.

In addition to her daughter, Dianne and her family, she is further survived by her sisters, Rose Skelly of Youngstown, OH, Helen Pantano of Clarence, NY, Janet Adamzak of Dunkirk, NY, several nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews.

Besides her parents, husband, Sam, and daughter, Donna J., she was predeceased by brothers, Frank J. (for whom the Acquavia Post in Dunkirk, NY is named) Monsignor Paschal Acquavia, and two sisters Mary J. Acquavia and Carmella Leone.
