Catherine S. Becker

Catherine S. Becker died at her residence in Fredonia, New York on July1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Arkwright on March 16, 1920 to the late Bert F. and Josephine (Scaccia) Maggio.

On Thanksgiving day in 1942, Catherine became the wife of the late Harley R. Becker, Sr. at St. Anthony’s Church in Fredonia. Besides being a wonderful mother to their two children, Joyce and Harley, Jr., Catherine also helped out working at the family farms in Arkwright and Dewittville. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and was famous for her cooking talents.

Catherine was a member of St. Anthony’s St. Lucy Society in Fredonia as well as St. John the Evangelist’s Altar and Rosary Society in Sinclairville.

Catherine is survived by her children, Joyce (Becker) Ross of Jamestown, and Harley R. Becker, Jr. of Dewittville; 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren. She is further survived by her sisters, Marie (Bert) DeCeilio of Fredonia; Jeanie (Ross) Cellino of west Seneca and Betty (Paul) Bulick of The Villages in FL, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank and Nelson Maggio, and sister, Alberta (Maggio) Reynolds, all of Fredonia.

Catherine was a very loving and generous person, not only to her family, but everyone she knew or met. As the matriarch of the family, Catherine was the one person who inspired her relatives to be strong and unified. Family and friends will surely miss her wonderful, caring nature and her beautiful smiles.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine’s memory to Chautauqua Hospice would be gratefully appreciated.

At 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine will be celebrated on Friday, July 7 at St. Anthony’s Church in Fredonia with the Reverend Joseph Walter officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend the Mass and may call at the Fantauzzi Funeral Home, 82 East Main Street, Fredonia today from 35 and 79 p.m. Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
