Donald G. Velzy

Donald G. “Buzz” Velzy, 88, of Dunkirk died unexpectedly Tuesday morning (Aug. 22, 2017) at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.

He was born May 18, 1929 in Silver Creek, the son of the late Ivan and Julia (Desor) Velzy.

A 1947 graduate of Silver Creek High School, Mr. Velzy had served in the National Guard.

He had been employed as a meat cutter at Acme Markets in Fredonia and as a bus driver and mechanic for the Dunkirk Public Schools. Following his retirement, he worked part time in maintenance for Northern Chautauqua Catholic School and the Dunkirk Senior Center.

A life member of the Dunkirk Exempts, Dunkirk American Legion Post 62 and Dunkirk Citizens Hose Company II, Mr. Velzy also belonged to the Elks Lodge 922, World War II Veterans, Lakeside Club and the First Ward Falcon Club. He also had served as captain of the City of Dunkirk Fire Police.

Mr. Velzy was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed golfing, especially with the First Ward Falcon Club Golf League as their official photographer.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Darlyn (Brown) Velzy, whom he married May 5, 1979; a son, Wayne Velzy (Donna DeLong); four stepchildren, Wilson (Becky) Mead, Walter (Grace) Mead, Jay (Dawn) Mead and Melinda (David) Mead; and several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Madge (Cargill) Velzy, who died Sept. 1, 1977; a son, Paul S. Velzy, on March 5, 1993; a sister, Dorothy Osborne (July 12, 2007); and a brother, Dr. Robert Velzy (Nov. 19, 2014).

Calling hours will be held Friday from 24 and 68 p.m. at the McGrawKowal Funeral Home. Private funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Willowbrook Park Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined.
